Churchgate (Marathi:चर्चगेट) is an area in downtown South Mumbai. When the city of Bombay had walls and had a fort area, one of the gates of the city walls led to the St Thomas Church. This was close to where Flora fountain exists today. Hence the area is called Churchgate. The city walls and the 'churchgate' were torn down as the city continued to expand. The only part of the city walls that still remain is near St George Hospital in CST.
